Karen Schulz
Washington, DC
Karen Schulz has been sewing since childhood, making textiles a natural medium for her artistic expression. Working with hand-painted, printed, and dyed cotton, she creates improvisational, abstract art quilts recognized for their dynamic compositions. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in museum, corporate, and private collections.
Schulz has received numerous awards, including twice winning Best in Show at Quilt National, where she also served as a juror in 2021. Originally from the Northeast, she has lived in the Washington, DC area for 50 years. After a 30-year career in social work and psychotherapy, she retired in 2012 to pursue art full time.
“To create that which has never been before, to bring to life out of nothing, through
the effort of my own hands, that is the thrill of art making.”
