Frank P. Phillips
Charlottesville, VA
Frank P. Phillips brings physical energy and transparency of process to his work in pencil, charcoal, and paint. "My pieces are about physicality and decision-making. The immediacy of drawing and painting allows me to attack spaces on the canvas." The layers evident in Phillips' work show the evolution of his thinking.
"I'm inspired by the possibility of making something new. I typically have a preliminary idea, but then react and change as I go. I never want to duplicate previous efforts, but hope to produce original work. It's infuriating stuff, as I fight the pull to return to old habit ideas."
