Daniel Sutherland is a landscape photographer whose breathtaking large prints portray the sweeping coastal environment of Nantucket Island, where he has lived for thirty years. In his painterly images of the ocean, Sutherland explores concepts of intimacy and introspection and subtle plays of texture and color.
“While my inclination is to reduce representational landscape to an essential abstraction, I acknowledge intimacy as a primary driver of my creative process. As opposed to sweeping grand themes in the landscape like the southwest, I feel invigorated by an intimate moment composed of place but more critically, of time. Time is where the magic happens.”
